About Me

My photo
I'm a California girl who from 2007-2008 studied abroad in Tokyo at Toyo University. 2008-2010 completed my B.A. Degree in Japanese at the University of Hawaii @ Manoa. I was hired on May 6th 2011 to become an Assistant Language Teacher with Interac Co., Ltd. After the events of 3/11 I wanted to do something to help Japan. I decided to start early with Interac and be placed in one of the prefectures most affected by the earthquake/tsunami. <3

Working again

A: Me in'uniform' B: Target

One of the best things about working again is getting out of the house lol Since I got back from Hawaii haven't gotten out of the house much.

I started my job at Target on the 22nd with the orientation. I've worked about a week now. I did miss retail there is something about interacting with people and helping them get what they wanted.

Though so far there was one lady that was horrible! But I can see things from her side though; long shopping day, screaming children in the store. I was being trained so the person ringing her up was telling me what needed to be done and how to do things and she said to her. "I know you have to train her but can you stop talking!" I was shocked but again she went on to say this was the last in a number of stores and she complained about loud children so I can see where she's coming from.

I personally don't like training days and the start because i don't like letting people down by messing up or being slow. But I guess that's what learning something is all about. You can't just start off amazing no matter what you'll be a bit shaky as you learn the ropes.

Target's ideal is Fun, Fast and Friendly. Meaning you get clocked and graded on how fast you do a transaction. Because of that I find myself sloppy at bagging. I never really did that before so I will have to get used to it i guess.

I really wish I didn't have 7+hr shifts. Standing there for that long is tiring and all the movement does hurt my wrist a bit.

Even though the pay is on the lower side it still is a nice place to work. The cash register is amazing! It's a life save! When I did mess something up it has step by step how to fix things. Like today I finished a transaction with out using the coupons the guest had. Though I was slow at fixing it it was easy ^^

A very small update from Interac: Got an email from Sara my recruiter saying Utah got all my documents everything is in order and now it'll be in Tokyo. Though to show how the whole Interac interview feels like you already have the job here is how Sara put it.

"After we send your documents to Tokyo office, they will answer all further questions you may have concerning offers and documents they need."

O_o nothing in the email about hearing if you get the job or not just direct your questions to them about offers and documents needed.

I should hear in another week! ^^

Side note: As I write this I am watching the Royal Wedding

And the dream of most little girls is about to come true for one...

Yet another interview!

A:Rose outside my front door ........ B:Statue on a bench, Harker School

I hope this will be the last one for a bit. Especially I have in mind that Interac will be at least for a couple years.

I interviewed for a school called the Harker School. They used to be a boarding school but to expand to a high school they turned the dorms into the high school. During the summer they have summer programs and one of them is a English Language camp. They get students from China, Korea, Japan mainly but they are open to anyone internationally. They look for student assistants that can speak one of the main languages that their students speak. It's a 7 week program with training week before. This is like the perfect pre-Interac job! Experience working with kids learning English and coming up with ideas for games and things.

So today was my interview and I believe that was it... I get my paperwork in and they contact my references and things. I don't think I have to go back in.

So I got an email before I left from Richelle the Interac recruiter and she asked for us to send her a headshot because she had forgotten to do that at the interview. Good timing I was dressed to impress at the interview so I took the shot and sent off the picture and asked about the Japanese level check.

Because of that I was running late to catch the bus. So I hurried myself to the bus stop which was about a mile away and made it just at the time the bus was scheduled to arrive and thankfully it was running a little late. So once on the bus I looked at the time and guessed when it would be close to getting to where I needed to get off. Google said it was a 48 minute bus ride. so I figured i'd pay attention to where i was about 40 minutes from then. @_@
In about a half hour I looked up out the window and saw the shopping plaza near the school and thankfully I knew the name of it because the interviewer gave me one address and their website gave me another then google said something else so I clarified with the interviewer that it was near that plaza. lol So needless to say I dashed off the bus just in time ^^;;;

I was going to go to a starbuck near by to wait for the interview and relax before hand... there was no starbucks to be found so I went to subway and got a coke zero and apple slices. And headed off to the interview.

At the school it reminded me so much of what elementary school was like for me. Watching the kids and thinking that now i'll be on the other side of that shaping young lives... Then a mother and daughter walked by and the daughter was talking about her homework in grammar and spelling and the mother listened to her and commented back. I swear it was a scene out of a movie or tv show. It made me tear up... my mother passed away about a year and a half ago so somehow remembering that feeling and thinking about how I can no longer rattle on about my day to her... wow even now i'm tearing up ^^;;; So anyways I calmed down cause I didn't want to cry before an interview or make my mascara run. ^^ So went for the interview.

Wow these things keep getting easier and easier. He was a nice personable guy so I didn't feel that nervous. His accent helped as well. I felt I faltered a little when he asked the question of what my strengths were I said I was genki and the kids will love me and I can explain things that are hard to understand and he asked if I would be considered a leader.... >_< I should of said that as a strength but he fished it out lol

I really love the idea of this summer program and I want to be a part of it. I even forgot to ask about the pay but he brought up. It's even more of a nice fit for the over all plan. I really want to work with kids though!

The closer I get to leaving and I research about ALTs I am falling more and more in love with the idea of being a teacher!

SF seminar finished and now it's up to Tokyo!

Just got back in the door from the Interac seminar/interview. I am tired lol I feel for my ride though he was out till 3am and woke again around 7:30 to take me and slept in the car while I was in my interview.

So I arrived and saw a sign saying Interac america was in boardroom 216 and headed for the elevator. I was being shadowed by a guy in the suit and once we both got out on the second floor we knew we were both going to the same place. Danny and I decided to head back downstairs because we were told to gather in the lobby. Plus it was looking a bit like a hotel room instead of a meeting room so we didn't want to knock lol.

Downstairs we sat down and shortly after that another guy in a suit carrying a white board walked in then another. The recruiter came down and joked seeing only 3 of us (one headed to the restroom) that she wouldn't be able to do the interview unless there were 6 of us. In the end that was how many of us there were. I was the only girl (outside of the recruiter). We went through the presentation which if you looked at the pdf they send you'll know all it says but the new info will come from the recruiter. for example she told us that if we were interested in leaving to be there June 19th there would be a bonus and that those who would leave in June would be looked at first. Also the Tokyo office will 'grade' your demo lesson.

When going over clothing being the only girl I felt a bit... reprimanded for what i wore lol She made extra comments of a shell under your blouse and a jacket ^^;;; i really hope that doesn't cost me the job but I still looked possessional anyways. half way through the presentation we took a break. First we completed our grammar test which ... i know it sounds strange but is harder and easier then you think. it was in 4 sections Sentences that had works underlined and you had to pick out which word was wrong or didn't need to be there. The next section was iding a sentence as passive or active voice. After that was spelling they had about 10 or so words and some were misspelled and if they were you needed to correct it. Like Tommorow -> Tomorrow.
Then there came the long run on sentence that is a paragraph that you have to put punctuations for. Think of it as this paragraph i'm writing with no capitalization or "." or ",".

It wasn't too bad except I know more about Active and Passive in Japanese than English and I'm one of the people that think spell check is from god! lol She did say we were all either average or above average on the grammar test.

so after the break we went back to the presentation and talked salary and things. I noticed this time that only 29% of the ALTs are female O_O that seems to be a representation of that in the interview. And that my perfect ideal placement of Nara might be in the "blue area".
So the presentation ended and we decided what order we would do our demo lessons and I got the second slot which also meant that I would be going second in the personal interviews too.

Overall. I have more confidence in my lesson demo even though my poster board tried to run away from me during it. The most surprising thing was that our demos were going to be in front of the other interviewees. Everywhere else i read they were private, just you the camera and the recruiter.

The guy first to go skipped the second task and went right to task 3 but when he was preparing for task 4 he saw the script sitting there and so did the reading of the script then. The taping was not stopped so when he was working on getting ready for the next task he was losing time.

I went with not too many problems. I think I'll break it down by task.

Task #1:
I used the most Japanese in my self intro and I could tell from the pronunciation of the others they were still early in their Japanese study. I felt bad because i really didn't want to show off... I just said some of the things they wanted in Japanese and kept the English simple.

My Japanese self intro I said:

My name is....
I was raised in California and graduated with a Japanese BA from Hawaii. I hope my 5 year experience working as an assistant teacher and my time studying Japanese will be of use to the students and teacher.

I though the BA from Hawaii and 5 years experience being of use was a little much in English...

hmmm one person did not use any Japanese if I remember correctly but we all ended up including something with hand motions.

Task #2:
Straight forward outside of the starter forgetting about it.

Task #3:
I and someone else did Simon Says I did Bunny says. There was a song for counting to 20. The best one which I will use in the future was counting in connection with animals. 1 duck, 2 cats, 3 rabbits. that kind of thing. it went up to... 4 or 5. Then there was... a tongue twisters of peter piper and sally selling seashells. and there was head shoulders knees and toes.

Task #4:
half of us did Option 1 with a shopping dialogue. One was almost like the example demo we were given. I had a fill in the blank with part of the dialogue and showed an example with a Book then asked the 'students' ideas of what they bought.

Two of them did Option 2 Directions. Both had great ideas. One used a little key chain size stuff bear as a character to give directions to. I did what i could to give a correction for the one who was doing their demo.

One did the third option which was irregular verb. Very ambitious choice!

So after the demos we were given our personality test and told when to be back after lunch. I was second to go so I had about an hour and a half (needing to be back by 2pm) before my interview so i got a hotdog near by and worked on my personality test. I got Idealist I believe lol guess i was a little too realistic to be guardian. The only problem with the test is that there are 70 questions to answer but it'll get done.

On my way up to the interview i saw the guys were back from lunch and walking by I believe Chris was his name took out his phone and showed me the time before i could ask what time it was. I had 5 minutes to get back up stairs. I paced a bit took a breath and knocked on the door.

The one on one I found to be more of a conversation with a focus on getting info on how you viewed the job. It's almost as if you were hired and they were placing you. You will most likely get send Pre-Interview Questions and that's basically what they ask. The recruiter and I traded stories. Only sad thing was that I learned that Nara might be hard to get into. I really didn't want to come off sounding like a tourist but since I didn't explain why Nara (the deer! lol) I did say I loved Japanese history and she said that was great to know because i could be placed somewhere there is a lot of history but might not be as famous.

My advice for the interview session and relax and be yourself. Say the truth and not what they want to hear. Thankfully all the recruiters I've talked to have been really friendly so it's easy to relax and share your love for Japan.

I kick myself now for not asking a question which I forgot again lol but I asked exactly what happens next. She told me she has until thursday to get her info and all my paperwork to Utah then every Tuesday packets get sent to Tokyo. Once Tokyo has your packet they have 7/10 days to look at it. so she said about 3 weeks but if I do the math and Tokyo gets my package next Tuesday I should hear between the 3rd and 6th of May. She said it might get delayed a bit because they are looking at those willing to leave in June first to get them started on the their visas. So maybe I'll hear May 10th. My late mother's birthday. As sweet and emotional as that might be I would like to hear the 3rd (or sooner! lol).

Ok that's it for the day I am going to see about dinner! ^-^

Edit: Funny how I forgot to add this in lol I was picking up my things to take to the car and ended falling when trying to stand up because of the skirt i had on. It was your standard straight skirt you might think of in terms of female suit. First time I owned on lol Going with the advice of the recruiter for humid japan and will wear pants in the future lol.
The recruiter made a comment about not embarrassing myself today and I reminded her of the fall with a laugh and she said no one saw and that when she looked over she just saw me on the ground lol we can pray that's true ^^

Today's the day!

I'm awake! I can't wait! I am going to get myself some breakfast in a moment and get ready. Woke up at 5:45 lol before the sun came up! Hoping to leave around 8 to get there somewhere between 8:30 and 8:45.

I'll do what i can to document the day!

Tomorrow is the day!

I can't wait!! I'm excited at the same time i feel like I did not prepare enough or come up with a good enough lesson. But I worked on it all today and went over it over and over again for weeks off and on so I have prepared.

I am excited to meet others who are standing in the same shoes as me hoping to get accepted. I hope tomorrow Rachelle will at least let me know that coming from the american side of recruitment I passed every stage. I will ask her about what now and what the chances are.

I got the job at Target and Monday I meet with the Harker school about the ESL camp. I really want that job!

Things are going great! Just got to kill it tomorrow!

I can't wait! Tomorrow I have an interview with Target Department store. Hope i get it! start making money to start off my life in Japan!
I admit I'm worried about the grammar test only because I'm so rusty on it. Been studying Japanese grammar for years lol

I was going to stay off the internet to focus on my interview prep but I'm glad I sneaked some looks at my email because the dream pre-Interac job i sent my resume for want to meet me to talk about the opening. It's a summer camp program for students around the world to come to California and study English. They are looking for assistant teachers who are bilingual to help out. I can't wait! I haven't gotten a reply yet but waiting! They said they'd talk to me over the phone which would be easier since it's an hour + bus ride there. But you really get to know people face to face so will do the bus time.

How perfect is this! seems everything is pointing me down the right path. JET not wanting me, Galileo not wanting me and even Interac's departure being delayed due to the earthquake.
I'll have time to work and earn starting money as well as be in my oldest friend's wedding.

Let's hope everything works out! ^-^

Only days away....

The most stressful thing about finding a job as an ALT in Japan is finding a job here in California so I can earn starter money.

Doing so well with the Interac application and finding nothing around here.

Today went for an interview with Target department store... lol well tried to anyway! Some high ups in the company dropped in so the interview is rescheduled for Thursday. Hope I get the job! ^^ It was strange being in the back because if it felt like I'd been there before... maybe that means I'll get the job!

On top of everything I'm working on my lesson plan for the Interac seminar this Saturday! That's it for Interac! This Saturday will be the last thing I can do for the application after that it's all in the Tokyo office's hands.

After that should be a wait of a few weeks to hear back from them ^^ Can't wait!!

Think I should stop updating and work on the lesson plan ^^

Wish me luck!
